What is Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence.

It is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.

The goal of AI is to create systems that can function intelligently and independently

AI is redefining what it is to be human, what it is to work. Machines can augment us in all sorts of interesting ways. AI will lead to new economies, transform cities, make us more efficient, change communication,  etc

Some Predictions about the Future of Work

Technologies like AI will eliminate some jobs and create demand for new skills that many workers don’t have

About 5 million job loss to technology by 2020

About 50% of the jobs we now have will disappear.

By 2020, AI will produce more jobs than it displaces.

A new definition of Work!

Buckminister Fuller, 1970

The purpose of life is not to work. We have to do away with the notion that everybody has to work to earn a living.”

If AI takes over menial tasks and allows humans to significantly reduce the amount of time they need to spend at a job, the extra time created will need to be filled. In order to feel that life has a purpose, humans will need to channel their newfound freedom into new activities that give them the same social and mental benefits that their job used to provide.
